Social media influencer Angela Holm is facing widespread criticism and condemnation for a late-night gym workout that involved her newborn baby. Footage of Holm, a mother of five, exercising in an empty fitness center with her infant strapped to her chest has garnered millions of views online, sparking intense debate about parental responsibility and safety.
Critics have described Holm's actions as "absolutely insane," "unsafe and irresponsible," and "dangerous." Concerns were raised about the potential for accidents, such as stumbling and falling, which could endanger the child. The video, posted to TikTok, also functions as an advertisement for a hands-free baby carrier designed by Holm.
Treadmill Risks for Children
Experts and organizations have cautioned against bringing young children into exercise areas due to significant health risks. A study by the Birmingham Children’s Hospital NHS Foundation Trust in the UK found that 29 children, including those under age 3, sustained injuries from treadmills while an adult was using the machine. These injuries included severe burns and scarring.
Researchers emphasized that "Treadmills can pose a significant danger to children" and that "These injuries are preventable." They urged regulatory authorities, manufacturers, and parents to take steps to address this emerging health concern. The National Independent Health Club Association (NIHCA) also advises against allowing infants in fitness equipment and weightlifting areas, citing tripping hazards, the presence of weights, and sharp edges as safety concerns.
Differing Reactions Online
Despite the backlash, some social media users have defended Holm, commending her for prioritizing her physical and mental well-being postpartum. Supporters highlighted the challenges of new motherhood and praised her dedication to staying active.
Comments included praise for her energy and commitment, with some users sharing their own experiences of exercising with infants. "I had really bad postpartum and [the gym is] the only thing that helped me. Proud of you mama for doing what you need to do," one commenter wrote. Another user stated, "I carried my daughter on the treadmill; she’s now 4."
