Model Boats Banned From Park Lake Due to Speed Concerns
Stevenage Borough Council has prohibited model boats from Millennium Lake unless part of an organized club session to prevent potential accidents.
Stevenage Borough Council has banned model boats from Fairlands Valley Park's Millennium Lake, with the exception of sessions organized by the local boat club. The restriction aims to prevent individuals from operating high-powered model boats on the lake, a move intended to enhance safety.
Ian Searle, secretary of the Stevenage Model Boat Club, noted that some commercially available model boats can reach speeds of 60-70 mph. He expressed concern that inexperienced users, who may not be insured, could attempt to operate these fast boats, increasing the likelihood of accidents.
While restrictions were previously placed on club members, banning boats with internal combustion engines, the recent signage targets those outside the club. "The sign by Millennium Lake was aimed at other people, just to take away the free for all for everyone else," Searle stated.
