‘MobLand’ Season 2 Episode 5 Recap: Family Feuds and Deadly Missions
Harry Da Souza attempts a family reunion that quickly devolves into chaos, while a mission to Ireland takes a perilous turn.
Season 2, Episode 5 of 'MobLand,' titled 'Birdland,' saw fixer Harry Da Souza orchestrate a peace conference for the fractured Harrigan family at the Cotswolds. The gathering, however, exposed deep-seated resentments and escalating problems within the family.
Family Under Strain
Harry arrived at the Cotswolds to find the family in disarray. He had to contend with Maeve's hostility, Kevin's aggressive ego clashes with Conrad, and Conrad's worsening dementia, which caused him to mistake his deceased son Brendan for being alive. Adding to the tension were Seraphina's divided loyalties and Bella's inappropriate advances toward Harry.
Before the conference, Harry discovered that Conrad had involved him in a violent massacre of Frankie Cooper’s men the previous night, with Conrad torturing one of the survivors. Harry ended the man's suffering, an act that highlighted the brutal realities of their world.
Meanwhile, Harry desperately tried to convince Jan that her lover was part of a setup orchestrated by Frankie Cooper. Jan, however, believed Harry was manipulating her and ended the call angrily.
A Dangerous Mission to Ireland
Adding to Harry's troubles, his daughter Gina was in Ireland with Eddie, Conrad and Bella's son, on a mission from Maeve described as “bring me the head of the Medusa.” Harry deduced the danger and commandeered a family helicopter to follow them.
In Ireland, Eddie, an inexperienced assassin, was cornered by 'Medusa,' a fearsome gangster played by Colm Meaney, who intended to torture him. Gina unexpectedly intervened, arriving just as Medusa was about to inflict severe harm. The situation was defused by Harry's timely arrival, who eliminated Medusa and his henchmen. This encounter exposed Gina to the lethal effectiveness of Harry's actions.
Betrayal and Escape
Back at the Cotswolds, Seraphina's attempt to maintain her cover with Donnie, an agent working with Kat McAllister, inadvertently led to a catastrophic betrayal. By revealing the family meeting, Seraphina's actions were relayed up the chain to Frankie Cooper and Kat, who authorized a strike against the entire Harrigan family. Although Seraphina warned her relatives, they were too late, forcing them to fight their way to safety using a second helicopter. The episode featured intense action sequences, including the raid on the Harrigan home and Harry's confrontation with Medusa.
Shifting Alliances and Personal Discoveries
Harry's departure from the family gathering raised suspicions among some members, potentially turning them against him. Jan, realizing Donnie's deceit after seeing a text from Seraphina, broke off their relationship.
The episode's performances were highlighted, with Pierce Brosnan noted for his portrayal of Conrad's grief and realization, Lara Pulver for Bella's intense confrontation, Joanne Froggatt for Jan's heartbreak, and Anson Boon for Eddie's vulnerability. The recap also noted the show's ability to balance brutal violence with moments of dark humor, exemplified by a sign in Medusa's pub.
