MLB Star Zack Gelof Sues Detroit Tigers Over Stadium Injury

Oakland Athletics infielder Zack Gelof has sued the Detroit Tigers, Ilitch Holdings, and the Detroit-Wayne County Stadium Authority for damages stemming from an injury he sustained at Comerica Park on July 9. The lawsuit claims that Gelof suffered a "severe laceration beneath his right kneecap" when his knee slammed into a fence while he was making a sliding catch in foul territory.

The injury caused Gelof to miss 30 games of the regular season, returning to play on August 10. Gelof's attorney, Jon Marko, stated that the injury could have been prevented with basic safety measures, such as padding on the metal fence. "All they had to do was put cheap padding up like they did after Zack was injured and this entire incident could have been avoided. My son's little league diamond is safer," Marko said.

The lawsuit contends that the missed playing time will negatively impact Gelof's future earnings, particularly as he approaches salary arbitration. Gelof earned $820,000 in 2026 and was eligible for a raise in the upcoming offseason. In his fourth season, the 26-year-old infielder hit .256 with 22 home runs and 55 RBIs in 111 games, setting career highs in home runs and RBIs.

A spokesperson for the Tigers stated, "We are aware of the lawsuit and do not comment on pending litigation."
