MLB Player Sues Detroit Tigers Over Field Hazard

Athletics player Zack Gelof has filed a lawsuit against the Detroit Tigers, Ilitch Holdings, and the Detroit-Wayne County Stadium Authority, alleging that exposed metal fencing at Comerica Park caused a knee injury that sidelined him for approximately one month. The lawsuit, filed Monday, centers on an incident in July when Gelof slid into the fencing while attempting to catch a foul ball.

Gelof's complaint states that the metal fencing lacked sufficient padding, posing a collision risk to players. The suit also alleges a failure to warn players about the potential hazard. According to the filing, the Tigers knew or should have known about the risk. The installation of protective padding after Gelof's injury is cited in the lawsuit as evidence that the team recognized the need for safety improvements.

In the 2026 season, Gelof posted a .256 batting average with 22 home runs and an OPS of .796. The injury resulted in a laceration that forced him to miss games during July and August. The amount of damages Gelof is seeking in the lawsuit is currently unspecified, but he is requesting compensation for the time he was unable to play due to the injury.
