MLB Offseason Begins: Dodgers, Padres, and Giants Face Free Agency Decisions
As the MLB offseason commences with the Milwaukee Brewers as World Series champions, several key players from the Los Angeles Dodgers, San Diego Padres, and San Francisco Giants enter free agency, marking the start of significant roster shifts.
The Major League Baseball offseason has officially begun following the Milwaukee Brewers' World Series victory, ushering in a period of free agency for numerous players across the league. The Los Angeles Dodgers, who finished behind the Brewers in the postseason, have seen a significant number of their players hit the open market.
Dodgers Free Agents
Nine players from the Dodgers roster are now free agents. These include starting pitchers Tarik Skubal, Kris Bubic, and Eric Lauer, as well as relief pitchers Alex Vesia, Evan Phillips, Blake Treinen, and Brusdar Graterol. Utilityman Kiké Hernandez and infielder Miguel Rojas also enter free agency. However, Rojas has announced his retirement from baseball following the Dodgers' elimination from the National League Championship Series.
Padres Free Agents
The San Diego Padres, who also competed in the postseason, are facing the departure of nine players into free agency. The list includes relief pitchers Adrian Morejon and Jason Adam, starting pitchers Ty France, Casey Mize, Robbie Ray, and Walker Buehler, outfielder Ramon Laureano, utilityman Luis Rengifo, and outfielder Austin Hays.
In addition to these free agents, the Padres have several players with existing contract options for the upcoming season. Relief pitcher Michael King has opted out of his deal, potentially seeking a longer-term contract elsewhere. Relievers Yuki Matsui and Wandy Peralta have player options to consider. Starting pitcher Nick Pivetta and relief pitcher Kyle Hart possess team options for the 2027 season, with the team expected to negotiate a new contract for Pivetta.
Three Padres players have mutual options for the offseason: infielder Miguel Andujar, and starting pitchers Griffin Canning and Lucas Giolito. It is anticipated that all mutual options will be declined by their November 2 deadline.
Giants Free Agents
The San Francisco Giants have had a less extensive list of players enter free agency at the outset of the offseason, with relief pitcher JT Brubaker being the sole player initially listed as a free agent.
