MLB Labor Dispute Complicates Managerial Searches for Phillies, Astros

The ongoing labor dispute in Major League Baseball and the looming Dec. 1 lockout are casting a shadow over the managerial searches for both the Philadelphia Phillies and the Houston Astros. The potential for a lockout, which would prohibit managers from communicating with players, introduces a significant complication for teams seeking to fill their top coaching positions.

Alex Cora, currently a favorite for the Phillies' manager job, is considering taking a year off. Cora has a strong track record and a good relationship with Phillies president Dave Dombrowski. However, he is still under contract and being paid more than $7 million annually. Cora also reportedly declined a similar offer over the summer. His upcoming marriage next month may also factor into his decision.

Despite the Phillies' 79-55 record under Don Mattingly, there remains a possibility they could retain him for the 2027 season. The Phillies' recent wild-card loss to the Braves has put Mattingly's future in question.

Astros manager Dusty Baker's contract is also set to expire after the season, adding another layer of uncertainty to the league's managerial landscape amidst the labor negotiations. The outcome of these talks could influence the availability and decisions of potential candidates across the league.
