Mitchell Robinson Sought Apology from Celtics Coach Joe Mazzulla

New Boston Celtics center Mitchell Robinson has stated that he and head coach Joe Mazzulla have moved past any lingering issues from Mazzulla's past strategy of intentionally fouling Robinson during games when Robinson played for the New York Knicks. Robinson, who joined the Celtics this offseason after eight seasons with the Knicks, spoke about his relationship with Mazzulla during the Celtics' media day.

Robinson indicated that he had initially approached Mazzulla seeking an apology. "At first, we had a little issue because I’m like, ‘You gotta say sorry for fouling me,’" Robinson said. He added that Mazzulla did apologize, and expressed optimism about their future working together. "But he apologized, and now we’re on the same team, so it’s going to be great, just build together and stuff like that, get to know him as the year goes on. I feel like it’s going to be epic."

Mazzulla's strategy, often referred to as "Hack-A-Mitch," was employed by several Eastern Conference coaches to exploit Robinson's free-throw shooting. Robinson's free-throw accuracy has varied over his career, with his best season being his rookie year at 60 percent. Last season, he shot 40.8 percent from the line. During the Celtics' Eastern Conference semifinal series against the Knicks in 2025, Robinson made 14 of 31 free throws, a 45.2 percent clip.

Mazzulla himself acknowledged the strategy at media day, even joking that he would miss the opportunity to foul Robinson. Robinson signed a three-year, $47.39 million deal with the Celtics, leaving the Knicks to join a conference rival. The contract reflects his value as a primary interior defender and offensive rebounder, especially after a strong playoff performance.

Robinson missed his introductory press conference for personal reasons. His move to Boston has drawn criticism from some Knicks fans due to the rivalry between the two teams.
