Mitchell Robinson, a key defensive player for the New York Knicks' recent championship team, has signed with the Eastern Conference rival Boston Celtics, fueling speculation about the circumstances of his departure.
Robinson's decision to leave the Knicks for the Celtics came shortly after the team celebrated its first NBA title in 53 years. In a response to a farewell message from former teammate OG Anunoby on Instagram, Robinson indicated that his exit was not his sole preference.
"I tried brother I didn't want this to happen hopefully the truth comes out at some point. I'm gonna miss you big dawg! Keep being great," Robinson wrote to Anunoby, suggesting a disconnect between his wishes and the team's intentions.
Mixed signals regarding the Knicks' payroll strategy may have contributed to the roster changes. Team owner James Dolan had previously expressed reluctance about exceeding the NBA's second apron, calling it "suicidal," which had already led fans to anticipate significant team adjustments. This was especially relevant with point guard Jalen Brunson expected to seek a higher salary after taking a pay cut to help secure the championship.
Robinson, who was drafted by the Knicks in the second round of the 2018 NBA draft, experienced both the struggles of a rebuilding team and the ultimate success of a championship squad during his tenure. He secured the final offensive rebound that effectively clinched the Knicks' title victory against the San Antonio Spurs in the preceding month.
Now, Robinson is set to join a Celtics team that appears to be retooling, having achieved a championship with the Knicks.
