Mitch McConnell Struggles to Speak During Senate Agriculture Committee Meeting
The 84-year-old Republican senator, who recently returned to Capitol Hill after a lengthy absence, appeared to need prompting on procedural matters.
Senator Mitch McConnell, 84, was visibly struggling to speak during a Senate Agriculture Committee meeting on Wednesday, appearing to be guided by colleagues on procedural actions, including casting a vote on the Farm Bill.
McConnell returned to Capitol Hill on Monday after an absence of more than 90 days. He had been recovering at home in Washington D.C. following a fall on June 14 that led to a brief hospitalization. His return to public view included casting a vote on Monday evening, where he was seen in a wheelchair huddling with colleagues.
On Monday, McConnell posted on X, formerly Twitter, that he was "really looking forward to being back on the Senate floor and seeing ... colleagues." He added, "My recovery has been a long and often frustrating process, and the lingering effects of childhood polio haven’t made it any easier. I’m still not quite back to 100%, but I’ve assured Leader Thune that, as I continue with physical therapy on the advice of my doctors, I will do my best to be present for tough votes when our Conference needs me." He also expressed gratitude for well wishes from his constituents and readiness to return to work.
This most recent committee meeting marked the first time McConnell was widely heard since his hospitalization. Previously, he had spoken with some congressional colleagues by phone, indicating he was recovering and intended to return to work. However, these communications reportedly did not fully satisfy some lawmakers. Weeks after his hospitalization, he had released a photo with his wife and a newspaper dated July 12, which some initially speculated might be AI-generated, before a second photo was released later that month.
McConnell's office stated after his discharge that he "continues his recovery from a fall at home in June" and has been maintaining "a strenuous course of physical therapy and rehabilitation." A statement from his office also revealed he had experienced a mild case of pneumonia.
This incident follows a similar episode in May when McConnell froze during a hearing, requiring intervention from a staffer to prompt him to continue. That moment also drew criticism from former President Donald Trump. McConnell, who is not seeking reelection this year, has experienced several health-related challenges during his final term in office.
