Senator Mitch McConnell shared a photograph Monday depicting his recovery from a fall that occurred at his Capitol Hill home in June. The 84-year-old Republican leader was photographed smiling next to his wife, former Transportation Secretary Elaine Chao.
McConnell has not yet received medical clearance to return to the Senate, which is scheduled to begin a five-week recess on August 10. Physicians from the Capitol’s Office of Attending Physician (OAP) are monitoring his rehabilitation daily. According to a statement from the OAP, McConnell has undergone extensive physical therapy and rehabilitation sessions since his discharge from hospital care.
These sessions are designed to rebuild strength and minimize the risk of future falls. The statement also noted that McConnell's history of childhood polio continues to be a significant factor affecting his mobility.
McConnell, who represents Kentucky, is in the final months of his 42-year tenure in the Senate, having previously announced that he will not seek re-election for a second term in November.
