Senator Mitch McConnell, 84, released a new photograph of himself and his wife, former Cabinet Secretary Elaine Chao, in an email on Monday. The image, dated Sunday, July 26, was shared as the senator continues to recover from a fall he sustained at home in June. He has not spoken publicly since his hospitalization 44 days ago.
In the email communication, McConnell expressed regret that he would be unable to attend a picnic event in Western Kentucky. An attached comment from his physician stated that the senator is undergoing a rigorous program of physical therapy and rehabilitation following his discharge from hospital care.
The newly released photo is similar to one distributed two weeks prior, which also emerged amid public discussion about McConnell's health. The previous image showed McConnell sitting up in bed and holding a copy of The Washington Post sports section dated July 12.
