Mistress Testifies About Affair with "American Idol" Contestant Accused of Murdering Wife

The mistress of former "American Idol" contestant Caleb Flynn took the stand Wednesday, detailing their affair and Flynn's alleged statements about his wife, Ashley Flynn. Flynn is on trial for the February murder of his wife, 37, in their Tipp City, Ohio, home. Prosecutors contend Flynn shot his wife after a years-long affair and then made the scene appear as a home invasion.
Flynn has pleaded not guilty, maintaining that an intruder killed his wife while he and their two daughters slept in an adjacent room.
Alleigha Botner, 24, testified that she met Flynn, then 36 or 37, in 2022 at Christian Life Center in Dayton, Ohio, where she was an intern and he volunteered. Botner stated she initially did not know Flynn was married. She recounted that Flynn frequently complained about his wife's family, the Smiths, for whom he worked, saying he "couldn't stand" them and "hated" them.
According to Botner, their relationship became romantic in early 2024 after Flynn expressed feelings for her. She testified that Flynn told her he felt justified in his feelings because he believed his wife had cheated on him two years prior, though he offered no proof beyond claiming a neighbor witnessed it. Botner stated Flynn repeatedly told her he hated his wife and referred to her with derogatory names. Botner admitted to also using similar language about Ashley Flynn, with both referring to her as "douchebag" and other vulgar terms.
Botner shared that she and Flynn got matching lightning bolt tattoos, bonding over "Harry Potter." She testified that she gave Flynn ultimatums to leave his wife by specific dates. When Flynn failed to meet these deadlines, Botner stated she was "done waiting" by January 2026, threatening to end the relationship if he did not leave his wife by January 11. Their communication continued until February 14, though Botner admitted to not replying to him several times during that period.
Botner, a 2020 graduate of Graham High School, was described in local reports as an honor roll student and a performer in the school band and choir. She earned an associate's degree in worship ministry from Highlands College. Online posts have suggested Botner and Flynn performed together at church, and she has maintained a YouTube channel where she posted videos, some of which may have been filmed in the apartment where they met.
