Missouri Freshman Football Player DJ Jones Undergoes Successful Heart Transplant
Missouri coach Eli Drinkwitz announced Thursday that freshman offensive lineman Johnnie 'DJ' Jones is recovering after receiving a heart transplant.
Missouri Tigers freshman offensive lineman Johnnie "DJ" Jones is recovering following a successful heart transplant, coach Eli Drinkwitz announced Thursday.
In a social media post, Drinkwitz shared a positive health update, stating that Jones' surgery went well and he is now in recovery. "We are incredibly grateful for the medical team who cared for DJ and for the donor and donor family whose extraordinary gift made this possible," Drinkwitz wrote.
Jones had been hospitalized at the Mayo Clinic in Jacksonville, Florida, awaiting the transplant, Drinkwitz said during a news conference Tuesday. The team's medical staff identified a potential issue with Jones' heart during freshman intake testing over the summer. After two weeks of observation without resolution or clear answers, the staff sought a second opinion from the Mayo Clinic.
Doctors at the Mayo Clinic ultimately detected a more serious heart problem, leading to the decision for a transplant, Drinkwitz confirmed last week. The 18-year-old Jones, a four-star recruit from Venice High School in Florida, is now recovering. The Missouri Tigers currently hold a 4-1 record as they approach Week 6 of the college football season.
