Missouri's Republican leadership is asking the U.S. Supreme Court to permit the use of a newly drawn congressional map for the upcoming midterm elections. This map, which was approved by a state judge, is intended to replace districts previously established by the state legislature.
State officials, including Attorney General Andrew Bailey, argue that the current congressional districts are invalid because they were drawn by the state legislature without the required supermajority support. The alternative map, backed by a judge, was designed to create a 6th Republican congressional seat in Missouri. Republicans currently hold six of the state's eight congressional seats.
The legal challenge centers on the process by which the districts were drawn and approved. The state's Republican leaders contend that the legislative map is the legally sound one. The case has reached the U.S. Supreme Court as Missouri seeks a resolution on which map will be used for the November elections.
