Missouri Attorney General Catherine L. Hanaway has launched an investigation into Poltivist Power Inc., a non-profit organization founded by former U.S. Representative Cori Bush. The investigation will examine claims that donations intended for tornado relief may have been diverted for political activities and whether Bush personally benefited from the fundraising efforts.

Poltivist Power Inc. was promoted by Bush, then a member of Congress, to donors for tornado relief in the St. Louis area shortly after a destructive tornado struck the region in April 2025. Bush described the organization as a "501(c)(4) organization uniting grassroots organizing with political strategy to fight oppression." However, records indicate that the organization may never have been registered as a tax-exempt entity with the IRS. This lack of a documented paper trail raises questions about the organization's fundraising practices and claims made to donors.

The investigation was initiated after a local news station reported that individuals claimed their contributions for tornado relief were instead directed towards Bush's political activities. "We do not have our own evidence of that, but that is what we are investigating," Hanaway stated, confirming the probe into the alleged diversion of funds.

Further complicating matters, Poltivist Power Inc.'s incorporation filing in Delaware listed the organization as "exempt," a designation that requires compliance with Section 501 of the Internal Revenue Code. Additionally, the organization's applications to ActBlue Civics, a fundraising platform for Democratic groups, also require tax-exempt status. The organization is still listed on ActBlue Civics.
