A Mississippi teenager died of apparent alcohol poisoning just five days after graduating from high school. Shannon Tanner, 19, was on a celebratory trip with friends in Bay County, Florida, when he was rushed to a hospital on May 20. He was removed from life support and pronounced dead later that day.
Deputies were called to a life-threatening medical emergency at the property where Tanner and his friends were staying. According to an incident report from the Bay County Sheriff's Office, individuals present stated that Tanner had been drinking heavily and showed signs of alcohol poisoning. One individual told an investigator that Tanner had "alcohol poisoning" and was "drinking too much."
Tanner's mother, Linda Thompson, stated that her son sent her pictures just two hours before he was taken to the hospital. She expressed confusion about how his condition deteriorated so rapidly. "I believe the EMT call was recorded around 9:40 that night, and we just don't understand, you know, how that happened so quickly," Thompson told WDAM.
Officials believe the death was a result of alcohol poisoning, but an official cause of death is still under investigation. Thompson acknowledged her son made a "bad decision" but said she wakes up every morning questioning the reality of his death. The family is still seeking answers regarding what transpired before Tanner was hospitalized and who may have supplied him with alcohol.
"The hospital and the police had to be the ones to contact us. How do you let someone’s kid go in an ambulance and not do anything?" Tanner's sister, Anna, questioned.
Shannon Tanner was remembered as a vibrant individual who was preparing to serve in the United States Air Force. His obituary noted his enjoyment of church and his role as a Waffle House employee, where his personality made an impact on many. He also made the decision to be an organ donor, a wish his family honored.
A GoFundMe campaign has been established to help his family with funeral expenses and other financial burdens during this difficult time, raising over $18,000 to date.
