Mississippi Police Say Woman's Hanging Was Staged After Death

Investigators believe Tasia Fortune was already dead before her body was hanged from a tree behind an abandoned home in Jackson, Mississippi, a detective testified Friday. The hanging of Fortune's body, discovered on Aug. 3, was "staged," Jackson police Det. Samuel Dukes stated, referencing the medical examiner's findings.

Authorities have not revealed the precise cause of Fortune's death but have classified it as a homicide. Two men have been arrested on murder charges, and a warrant has been issued for a third individual. The motive for the killing appears to be a drug dispute, according to Det. Dukes, who added that interviews indicated Fortune struggled fiercely before her death.

The case has drawn significant attention due to the circumstances echoing historical lynchings in the Southern state, which has a profound history of racial violence. Police have not elaborated on why they suspect the defendants hanged Fortune's body after she had already died.

Det. Dukes provided testimony at a hearing for Jarques Ratliff, 51, the first individual arrested in the case. Ratliff, who has pleaded not guilty, is being held without bond in the Hinds County jail. The hearing aims to determine if sufficient evidence exists to present the case to a grand jury for potential indictment. The proceedings are scheduled to resume on Sept. 30.

Police apprehended the second defendant, 25-year-old Earnest Lloyd Jr., earlier this week. During Friday's hearing, Ratliff stated that Fortune had been a friend of his.

Fortune's mother, Christy Spivey, has stated that her daughter, a mother of four, had faced homelessness in recent years and that she was unsure of Fortune's living situation at the time of her death. Spivey mentioned that Fortune had aspirations of starting a cleaning business and was working to improve her life.
