Mississippi Police Investigate Staged Hanging of Tasia Fortune
Mother expresses shock and confusion as authorities reveal Tasia Fortune was allegedly dead before her body was found in a tree.
The mother of Tasia Fortune, a 29-year-old who was found hanging from a tree in Jackson, Mississippi, in August, has spoken out after police stated they believe her daughter was deceased before her body was placed at the scene.
Jackson Police announced Friday that the medical examiner determined Fortune's death to be a homicide and that the hanging itself was staged. The discovery had initially raised fears in the majority-Black city due to Mississippi's history of racial violence and lynchings. However, the latest information from authorities has introduced more questions for Fortune's mother, Christy Spivey.
"I have more questions now than what I did before," Spivey told the BBC. She expressed initial relief upon learning her daughter did not die by hanging, but the subsequent details have been distressing.
Three individuals have been arrested in connection with the case, all of whom are Black. Police have not yet disclosed the exact cause of Fortune's death or any motive behind the alleged staging.
On Friday, detectives told a court that Fortune's death is suspected to be linked to a drug-related dispute, with allegations that she may have been killed over claims of stealing drugs. Spivey acknowledged her daughter's struggles with addiction but rejected the idea that it led to her death, stating, "Tasia has an addiction - had - an addiction problem. She was trying to get better."
Fortune, who was homeless at the time of her death, is survived by her four sons, aged one to seven. Two of her children are in the process of adoption, while the others are living with family and friends.
