Mississippi Governor Mocks Lane Kiffin, LSU After Ole Miss Victory

Mississippi Governor Tate Reeves engaged in public taunting of LSU football coach Lane Kiffin and the Tigers program after Ole Miss secured a 32-24 victory in Kiffin's return to Oxford.

Reeves took to the social media platform X (formerly Twitter) to comment on the game's outcome, specifically referencing Kiffin's contract and the team's roster spending. "What does a $54 million buyout for the old coach, a $91 million contract for the new coach, and a $50 million roster get you?" Reeves wrote. "An a-s whipping in Oxford, Mississippi!"

The governor's remarks alluded to Kiffin's departure from Ole Miss to take the coaching position at LSU and the significant financial investments made by the Tigers. The game itself was highly anticipated, marked by considerable animosity. Kiffin reportedly faced boos and was met with middle fingers upon his return to Vaught Hemingway Stadium.

During the game, LSU managed to rally in the third quarter, scoring two touchdowns to narrow the deficit to three points. They subsequently tied the game with a field goal early in the fourth quarter. However, Ole Miss quarterback Trinidad Chambliss sealed the victory with a 14-yard touchdown run with 6:14 remaining, followed by a successful two-point conversion that extended their lead to eight points.

Following the game, Kiffin acknowledged the emotional nature of the contest. "I’m glad it’s over. This was an emotional game for a lot of reasons," Kiffin stated. "A lot of life-changing experiences here. A lot of really good people that helped me through some really hard times. Sometimes I don't act like it, but I'm a human, too. Congrats to those guys. They played really well. They deserved to win."

Chambliss also commented on the significance of the win, noting the heightened emotions surrounding the matchup. "It meant more than other games. I’m finally glad we got that one out of the way because emotions were really high for this game."

The victory is expected to lead to Ole Miss, which was ranked No. 8 entering the game, leapfrogging LSU, ranked No. 7, in the upcoming AP poll.
