A cat named Ginge has been reunited with his owner after disappearing nearly a year ago and being found 86 miles from his home. Lucy Roche, a volunteer branch leader for Cat Action Trust 1977, discovered Ginge in Garforth, Leeds, among a feral cat colony.

Roche noticed that Ginge was more amenable to human interaction than the other cats and took him to a veterinarian. A microchip scan revealed the cat belonged to an owner in Sunderland, more than 86 miles away. The owner was overcome with emotion upon learning her pet had been found.

Roche stated that Ginge seemed tired and had likely not had a good night's sleep for some time. He spent the night at Roche's home before his owner could collect him. A video capturing the reunion has gained significant attention online.

The Cat Action Trust shared the reunion on Facebook, noting the widespread positive reaction to the story, with messages of support coming from international viewers. Roche emphasized the importance of microchipping, which enabled Ginge's return, highlighting that it became a legal requirement for pet cats in England in 2024.

The Cat Action Trust's rescue branch in Leeds operates entirely with volunteers who respond to a constant stream of calls for assistance.
