Miquita Oliver Recounts Homelessness and Alcoholism Battle
The former T4 presenter shared her struggles with alcoholism, homelessness, and bankruptcy during her late twenties and early thirties.
Miquita Oliver, once a prominent presenter on Channel 4's youth show T4, has opened up about a challenging period in her life marked by homelessness, alcoholism, and financial hardship. The 42-year-old shared her experiences on the podcast "Happy Place" with Fearne Cotton.
Oliver detailed how losing television jobs and facing public scrutiny contributed to her struggle with alcohol during her late twenties and early thirties. "She was an alcoholic, but there was no I had nowhere to turn. I was stuck," Oliver said, describing her past self. She explained that she often drank to escape her reality, particularly when she was no longer working but still recognizable to the public. "Everyone knows who you are and what you look like but you can't go anywhere - you're not working and you have no money but everyone knows who you are. It's a really like a terrible place to exist. So, I just wanted to be in a haze all the time."
The presenter's career faced setbacks, including losing her T4 hosting gig in 2010 after reportedly mocking singer Kesha. Earlier, in 2005, she was dismissed from her Radio 1 role following an interview in which she criticized Fearne Cotton.
Oliver also previously discussed her bankruptcy in her late twenties, which stemmed from not paying taxes for three years. She was hit with a significant tax bill in 2012 and was forced to sell personal belongings to repay it. This financial crisis led to her losing her two-bedroom flat in London and living on her mother Andi Oliver's sofa.
Despite the difficulties, Oliver found solace and unexpected joy during her time living with her mother and grandmother. She described this period as a "gift" that allowed her to connect with her family. "Suddenly, I'm living with her all day, every day. I'm with her. We start watching documentaries every night. We go on these long walks with the dogs. We have this time that I will never forget now," she recalled.
In 2022, Oliver moved into her own flat in east London. Reflecting on her past struggles, she stated, "Now I live in the best flat that I would have never dreamt of existing. It's so beautiful and I totally had to go through the sofa to get to what we like to call Palace Of Dreams."
