A Minnesota man faces a manslaughter charge after allegedly crushing a co-worker's head with a heavy-duty hydraulic grapple machine.
Christopher Boone Crimmins, 34, has been charged with second-degree manslaughter in the death of 26-year-old Tyler Anthony Lynch. The incident occurred Thursday afternoon in Apple Valley, Minnesota, while both men were working.
According to a criminal complaint filed in Dakota County, Crimmins was operating the grapple machinery on the back of a truck as Lynch collected leaves from the ground. Crimmins told police that he and Lynch were "f***ing around" when they noticed the shadows cast by the grapple and Crimmins's head on the ground.
Crimmins stated he was watching Lynch's shadow and moved the grapple to make it appear as though it was grabbing Lynch's head. Because he was focused on the shadow, he did not realize the grapple had closed around Lynch's actual head. A witness reported seeing the grapple "hit or pinch" Lynch.
Authorities have charged Crimmins with culpable negligence, stating he created an unreasonable risk. Responding officers found Lynch with a significant head injury and a large amount of blood around his body. Lynch was pronounced dead at the scene.
Lynch had been working in professional tree services since 2021, according to his social media. A family member posted on Facebook, expressing condolences to Lynch's parents and step-father.
Dakota County Attorney Keena released a statement offering condolences to Lynch's family and friends.
If convicted, Crimmins could face up to 10 years in prison. His next court appearance is scheduled for September 10 in Hastings, Minnesota.
The Occupational Safety and Health Administration is investigating the incident to determine if safety violations or other factors contributed to the death. Funeral and memorial service details have not yet been announced.
