Minnesota Shooting Suspect Released on Bail, Sparks Political Criticism
Adam Abdihakeem Adam, 18, posted bond just two days after his arrest in a homecoming football game shooting that injured two teenagers.
A Minnesota homecoming celebration was disrupted by gunfire, and the suspect's subsequent release on bail has ignited political debate. Adam Abdihakeem Adam, 18, posted bond and was released on Saturday evening, according to Hennepin County jail records. He faces felony charges of second-degree assault with a dangerous weapon and riot while armed with a dangerous weapon.
Adam was arrested on October 8 following a shooting that occurred on October 2 outside Eden Prairie High School during its homecoming football game. Police reported that the incident involved a fight between approximately 10 individuals, during which the driver of one vehicle allegedly opened fire on two teenagers, aged 18 and 17, before fleeing the scene. Both victims sustained injuries.
Investigators identified Adam as the alleged shooter, stating he was driving his brother's car and that his phone's location data placed him at the scene. A search of his St. Louis Park home reportedly uncovered clothing matching surveillance footage of the suspect. He was taken into custody without incident on October 8.
Adam's release drew immediate criticism from an account associated with former President Donald Trump. The account highlighted police statements linking the shooting to rival Somali gangs and stated that a "Radical Left judge" granted him no-condition bail. Jail records indicate his bail was set at $100,000, with an option for bond without conditions. His next court appearance is scheduled for Monday afternoon.
The case has amplified concerns about Somali gang-related violence in the Minneapolis metropolitan area. Regional public safety agencies have convened to coordinate intelligence and investigations in response to a series of shootings. Republican U.S. Senate candidate Michele Tafoya has pointed to the homecoming shooting and other recent incidents as evidence of a rising threat level in Minnesota.
Eden Prairie police stated that the homecoming shooting investigation remains active, and further arrests or charges are possible. They are also investigating a separate shots-fired incident at a Speedway gas station on October 5, but have not yet established a connection to the homecoming shooting.
