Minnesota Races Tighten as GOP Candidates Gain on Democrats Amidst Fraud Scandal

Republican candidates in Minnesota are showing renewed strength in races once considered safely Democratic, with recent polls indicating narrowing gaps in both the Senate and gubernatorial contests. This shift is being attributed, in part, to voter discontent surrounding a large-scale fraud scandal that has drawn national attention.

In the race for the U.S. Senate, GOP candidate Michelle Tafoya is reportedly within two to three points of her opponent, Lieutenant Governor Peggy Flanagan, according to recent polling. Simultaneously, in the gubernatorial race, Minnesota House Speaker Lisa Demuth is challenging incumbent Governor Tim Walz. Demuth, speaking at a Republican volunteer event, stated that Minnesotans are "ready for a change" and cited concerns about state affordability and fraud as key issues.

"We have heard from Minnesotans across the state," Demuth told Fox News Digital. "When we’ve been traveling, that they are ready for a change, it's nice to see the polling start to reflect that, but we were hearing voters ready for a change, ending fraud, making the state affordable, just all the desperate change we have needed."

The ongoing fraud scandal, which involves allegations of billions of dollars being improperly diverted through fake learning centers and autism care programs, is frequently mentioned by voters and political figures. Harry Niska, the GOP House Majority Leader, highlighted the scandal's impact, telling Fox News, "It’s not a surprise to those of us who have spent months talking to voters in Minnesota as more and more Minnesotans become aware of the billions of dollars that have been stolen from our taxpayers."

This scandal has reportedly led to a significant drop in Governor Walz's approval ratings, with some reports suggesting he trails former President Trump in hypothetical matchups. Voters interviewed at a local event expressed frustration. "It’s infuriating," one individual commented. "There’s just no rules, and we all pay for it, it's like, how does this even happen?"

Despite the tightening races and voter discontent, some Democrats remain skeptical of the Republican chances. One Democratic voter acknowledged that mistakes have been made by the party but views the Republican party as a threat to the country. He pointed to the strong ground game of Republican volunteers as a positive sign for the GOP, but questioned overall voter turnout.
