Stephen Duane Junker, a 58-year-old pastor and father of five from Minnesota, died on September 4, weeks after sustaining a severe spinal cord injury in a swimming pool incident aboard a Princess Cruises ship. Junker was on a cruise off the coast of Italy to celebrate his son's wedding when he was found unresponsive at the bottom of the Sun Princess's pool on August 16.

He was rescued and transported to a hospital in Naples by the Italian coast guard, where he underwent emergency spinal surgery. Doctors discovered severe compression on his spinal cord, which left him quadriplegic and requiring a ventilator. While initial signs showed some promise, further diagnostic testing revealed injuries that were not treatable, and he passed away surrounded by family and friends.

Junker, who served as pastor at Chippewa Lutheran Church in Brandon, Minnesota, was described as a devoted husband to his wife, Jeanine, and a loving father to his five children. His family established a GoFundMe to support his medical care and recovery, noting his quiet faith and dedication to his family and congregation. Before entering ministry, Junker practiced as a pharmacist after graduating from Creighton University.

He earned a Master of Divinity from The Lutheran Brethren Seminary and dedicated nearly a decade to his ministry at Chippewa Lutheran Church. His obituary highlighted his animated sermons, engaging conversations, and willingness to help those in need. Friends and community members remembered him for his faith and comforting presence during difficult times, including the final moments of a parishioner's life.
