Minnesota Man Hailed Hero for Saving School Bus of Children

A 27-year-old Minnesota man is being credited with saving the lives of nearly 20 children when their school bus driver experienced a medical emergency on Monday. Ebro Ahmed was outside a convenience store in St. Paul's Dayton neighborhood when he noticed a school bus traveling with its doors open.

Recognizing a dangerous situation, Ahmed observed the driver appearing to have a seizure. He immediately boarded the moving bus and engaged the emergency brake, bringing the vehicle to a safe stop. Ahmed recounted the chaotic moments, stating he attempted to put the bus in park, accidentally shifted it into reverse, and then managed to get it into neutral before pulling the brake.

"I really felt like it was my duty," Ahmed told ABC News. "It’s kids we’re talking about, you know. Even if I were to die, it would still be worth it."

Surveillance footage from the convenience store captured the dramatic intervention. Ahmed described some children screaming while others remained calm. He recalled handing his phone and glasses to a young girl near the front of the bus and asking her to hold them as he focused on controlling the situation. He credited two girls on the bus with providing significant assistance.

Despite the high-pressure circumstances, Ahmed maintained his composure, attributing his ability to think clearly partly to lessons learned from the medical drama "Grey's Anatomy." He explained that the show provided him with insights on how to react in unexpected emergency scenarios.

Saint Paul Public Schools confirmed that a medical emergency had occurred on the bus and that paramedics responded. No injuries were reported among the children or the driver. The students were transferred to another bus to complete their journey home. School officials stated that counselors checked in with the students on Tuesday to offer support following the frightening incident.
