Minnesota Coach P.J. Fleck Wipes Player's Blood on His Face After Victory

Minnesota Golden Gophers head coach P.J. Fleck embraced the concept of "blood, sweat and tears" in a literal sense following his team's 27-24 victory over Washington on Saturday. In a post-game celebration, Fleck wiped blood from the face of linebacker Maverick Baranowski onto his own.

Baranowski was bleeding from his mouth after being inadvertently struck by a cleat on the final play of the game. Fleck then took Baranowski's head in his hands and applied the blood to his own face, exclaiming, "Blood brother."

"Back in the day, I’m sure that’s what they did — the frontiersmen out West," Fleck commented on the act. "Little blood on there, I guess."

Baranowski, who has been with the Minnesota program for five years under Fleck, recorded seven tackles, a sack, and an interception in the game. Fleck praised Baranowski's dedication, comparing him to NFL players Blake Cashman and Robert Spillane, whom Fleck coached previously. "The kid loves the game, plays the game the right way. He is the heartbeat of our defense and our team," Fleck said.

Teammate Javon Tracy described Fleck as "crazy" and "very energetic" for his actions, noting that while he wouldn't do the same, Fleck is known for his unique approach. The win improved Minnesota's season record to 3-1.
