Minneapolis Shooting: Videos Show Officers Wounded in Apartment Building

Dramatic videos and 911 transcripts released by the City of Minneapolis provide a clearer picture of the events that unfolded on September 2, when a man killed two people and wounded five others, including two police officers, inside an apartment building. The footage captures the moments officers entered an apartment in pursuit of the suspect, Carlton Johnson, and were subsequently shot.

In one video, Officer Joseph Michnowski is seen walking toward a victim on the ground in a hallway when Johnson suddenly appears from a corner, drawing a handgun. Johnson fires at Michnowski, who retreats while reporting that he sustained gunshot wounds. Moments later, Officer Yahye Mahmed Ahmed, positioned at a stairwell landing, also comes under fire. The sound of additional gunshots is heard, followed by officers retreating down the stairs.

"Oh, I got hit," Ahmed can be heard saying.

The incident began when Johnson shot and wounded a woman, believed to be the mother of his child. The child was present but unharmed. Frantic 911 calls from residents and employees began flooding dispatchers shortly after 4:30 p.m. One caller, who stated she was shot in the legs and unable to move, expressed fear for her child's safety. Another employee, hiding in a storage room, reported Johnson was in the lobby and expressed uncertainty about his continued presence.

After injuring two building employees, Johnson reportedly went to the ninth floor, where he killed two residents. He was later fatally shot by police. Authorities stated it remains unclear if Johnson specifically targeted the residents or encountered them incidentally.

Building residents and officials indicated that Johnson was facing eviction proceedings and had previously made threats against neighbors, warning of impending violence. Court documents and law enforcement officials confirmed that at least one individual had sought a restraining order against him. While police investigated Johnson in June for displaying a weapon, the county attorney's office did not file charges at that time.
