Minkah Fitzpatrick Already Elevating Jets Defense After Injury Return
Safety makes significant impact in first full game back, recording an interception and a career-high tackles.

Safety Minkah Fitzpatrick's return to the New York Jets defense has already proven impactful, as evidenced by his performance in the team's recent 23-12 loss. Fitzpatrick, who was limited to six snaps in his Week 1 debut before suffering a groin injury, played all 89 defensive plays in the game against Chicago. He recorded the Jets' first interception since 2024 and amassed a career-high 16 tackles, becoming the first safety in the league since 2019 with at least 10 tackles and one pass defended in a single half.
Despite the defensive unit's struggles in the game, which saw the Jets held to 157 total yards and commit 12 penalties, Fitzpatrick's presence was a notable positive. He acknowledged areas for personal improvement but emphasized the importance of self-reflection after any loss. "Even though I made some plays, there’s still some plays I left out there," Fitzpatrick stated. "When you lose a game, the most important thing to do, whether you played well or not, is to look in the mirror at yourself, and figure how you could’ve played better, how you could improve your chances of winning."
Fitzpatrick, acquired from the Dolphins in March and signed to a three-year, $40 million contract, not only ended a 20-game interception drought for the franchise but also eased the pressure on a defense that had gone without a takeaway for an extended period. His versatility and leadership were highlighted by linebacker Demario Davis, who noted Fitzpatrick's ability to play various positions and his role as an "on-field general."
"He’s a special talent, just in the way that he can roam the field. He can play deep in the post or play in the box. He can come down and play in the nickel slot," Davis said. "So when you have somebody that can give that type of versatility it helps. He’s an on-field general, he’s a guy that’s making all those calls and those checks, he knows how to put guys in the right position. So when you have a guy like that it elevates the entire group. I’m certainly glad that we got him with us."
