Millions of dog owners across the United Kingdom believe their canine companions have a sixth sense for danger and can detect when something is amiss. Research suggests that 80 percent of owners report their dogs sensing when something is wrong, with an equal percentage trusting their pets for protection.
More than a third of surveyed owners stated their dog has alerted them to undisclosed well-being issues, while 22 percent have been woken by their dogs during an emergency. Furthermore, 52 percent of respondents believe their dogs understand when they are feeling sad, and 44 percent say their dogs recognize when they are stressed or unwell.
These findings were released by Burns Pet Nutrition, a dog food brand, in conjunction with the launch of The Burns Bravery Awards. Former Strictly Come Dancing star Karen Hauer is set to host the awards ceremony in London this November, which aims to honor heroic dogs.
Hauer shared her personal experience, recounting a time when her dog provided comfort during a period of overwhelming stress, stating, "They didn’t know what was wrong but somehow they knew I needed them." She also highlighted the compassionate nature of dogs, noting that even those who have endured hardship, such as limb loss or street life, continue to show trust and love.
The research also revealed that 75 percent of owners turn to their dog for comfort after a difficult day, and 56 percent regularly discuss their problems with their pets. An additional 76 percent confide secrets to their dogs that they would not share with others.
Overall, 98 percent of dog owners surveyed reported that their dogs have positively impacted their mental well-being. A spokesperson for Burns Pet Nutrition emphasized the deep value owners place on their dogs' instincts, support, and protection, and noted that the awards also aim to highlight the work of Britain's Mountain Search & Rescue dogs.
Nominations for The Burns Bravery Awards are currently open, with winners to be announced in November following public voting.
