Millions of babies born in the United States during the nation's 250th anniversary celebration will receive a special commemorative Social Security card. The Social Security Administration (SSA) initiative will provide limited-edition cards to children born between July 2 and December 31, 2026.
These cards will feature the official Freedom 250 logo and will serve as a unique keepsake tied to the country's 250th birthday. They will function identically to standard Social Security cards and will be among the first official federal documents many American children receive. The commemorative designation is exclusive to original cards issued through the agency's Enumeration at Birth (EAB) program during this specific six-month window.
SSA Commissioner Frank J. Bisignano stated that "Freedom 250 is a celebration of America's storied history and the monumental moments that have shaped our nation." He added that under the leadership of President Donald J. Trump, the SSA is working to strengthen the program and improve services. The commemorative cards are being issued at no additional cost to families or taxpayers.
Parents will not need to submit extra paperwork, pay additional fees, or sign up separately for the commemorative version. The cards will be automatically issued through the EAB program, which allows parents to request a Social Security number while completing birth registration at hospitals or birthing centers. Babies born before July 2 or after December 31, 2026, as well as individuals requesting replacement cards, will receive the standard version.
The EAB program has been in place since 1987, facilitating a partnership between the SSA and hospitals and state vital records offices. With over 3.5 million children born in the U.S. annually, millions of families are expected to receive the commemorative card during its rollout. The SSA has also cautioned parents about potential scams, emphasizing that the agency will not request payment or personal information beyond the standard birth registration process to obtain these cards.
