Millionaire Driver Spared Jail After Killing Mother of Two in Speeding Crash
Ronald Dowling, who was driving his Maserati at 76 mph in torrential rain, admitted causing death by careless driving.
A millionaire businessman has avoided jail after admitting to causing the death of a mother-of-two while speeding in a Maserati during torrential rain. Ronald Dowling, 66, killed Sharon Berry, 54, in October 2023, on the A4042 in Pontypool, Gwent. He was driving at 76 mph in conditions described as 'terrible' when his £70,000 sports car aquaplaned and crashed into Mrs. Berry's Audi, which was parked in a layby.
Mrs. Berry died from her injuries three months after the collision. Dowling, a father-of-five, also seriously injured his two passengers: his wife, Kim, and a friend, Jane Beedell. Mrs. Dowling sustained injuries requiring a wheelchair, and Ms. Beedell was placed in an induced coma with broken bones and a brain bleed. Ms. Beedell, who has since left her Civil Service job of 48 years, stated in a victim impact statement that she is now reliant on care.
At Merthyr Tydfil Crown Court, Dowling pleaded guilty to causing death by careless driving and two charges of causing serious injury by careless driving. He was sentenced to 27 months in prison, suspended for two years, ordered to complete 250 hours of unpaid work, and banned from driving for four years. He was also ordered to pay costs of £1,630.
Judge Celia Hughes described Mrs. Berry's death as 'completely senseless,' noting that she was simply sitting in her car at the roadside. The judge emphasized that no sentence could bring Mrs. Berry back or lessen the pain for her family and friends.
Dowling, who made his fortune through a company that laid specialist floors, has become his wife's full-time carer following the crash. His defense lawyer stated that Dowling's remorse is genuine and that he is constantly reminded of the incident by his wife's condition. The defense also noted Dowling suffers from PTSD, anxiety, and sleep problems due to the crash.
The court heard that Dowling had been taking Ms. Beedell to a hospital appointment at the time of the incident. Mrs. Berry's family described her as 'full of love and laughter.' Her son, Luke, shared the ongoing pain of loss, stating he often reaches for his phone to call his mother before remembering she is gone. Mrs. Berry's sister, Lorraine Ashton, spoke of the hope, fear, and uncertainty experienced during her sister's hospital stay and the lasting impact of her death.
Dowling was driving at over 70 mph in the seconds leading up to the impact. The judge stated that his careless driving and speeding in hazardous conditions had devastating consequences for everyone involved.
