Militant on Watchlist Arrested for Arson at French Town Hall

An "ultra-left" militant, already on France's national security watchlist, has been arrested in connection with the fire that destroyed the historic town hall in Limoges during recent nationwide riots.

Officials identified the suspect as a 34-year-old man with a history of violent acts against public officials. He is considered the primary suspect in the arson attack that engulfed the 140-year-old landmark, causing its clock tower and roof to collapse.

The suspect was apprehended Tuesday morning in Val d’Issoire, approximately 30 miles from Limoges. Authorities described him as belonging to a violent radical-left group.

The fire at the Limoges town hall occurred during widespread protests across France, fueled by anger over the high cost of living. The incident is part of a larger pattern of unrest that has seen clashes, arson, and looting in various cities.

Limoges Mayor Guillaume Guerin stated that the listed building will require a reconstruction effort comparable to that of Notre Dame Cathedral. Guerin has indicated he may resign if the French government does not provide funding for the rebuilding.

Across the country, the weekend's protests resulted in the arrest of nearly 1,500 individuals. Officials reported on Tuesday that many of those arrested have already been convicted and sentenced to prison for charges related to violence or property damage. Curfews have been implemented in several French cities in an effort to prevent further disorder.
