Miley Cyrus' 'Bass Persuades' Plummets on Billboard Charts, Sets Record for Female Artists
The album experienced the largest drop from No. 1 by a female artist in Billboard 200 history.
Miley Cyrus' latest album, "Bass Persuades," has made Billboard history for the most significant fall from the No. 1 position for a female artist. After debuting at the top of the Billboard 200 chart on September 28, the album plummeted to No. 157 in its second week.
Initially, "Bass Persuades" achieved No. 1 by selling approximately 61,000 total album units, which include physical sales and streaming figures, according to Billboard. This debut was bolstered by Atlantic Records offering the album at a discounted digital price and releasing numerous physical variants, including 16 vinyl editions, nine CD versions, six download options, and a cassette.
This sharp decline surpasses previous records set by other female artists. Madonna's "Madame X" previously held the record for the largest drop, falling from No. 1 to No. 77 in 2019. Celine Dion later surpassed this when her album "Courage" dropped from No. 1 to No. 111.
Cyrus had celebrated the album's No. 1 debut, expressing gratitude on Instagram. "This process has been some of the best times for me. Everyone involved made it possible and more importantly fun and memorable," she wrote. "Thank you Atlantic, my team, and everyone who walks beside me with conviction. I love you. To the fans you make my world go round. Making music for you brings immeasurable joy to my life. Forever."
Taylor Swift has since reclaimed the No. 1 spot on the Billboard 200 with the deluxe "Encore" edition of her album "The Life of a Showgirl."
"Bass Persuades" is Cyrus' first album released under Atlantic Records after her departure from Columbia Records earlier in the year. It marks her first No. 1 album since 2013's "Bangerz."
The overall record for the steepest drop from No. 1 belongs to Bon Jovi, whose album "This House Is Not for Sale" fell from No. 1 to No. 169 in its second week in 2018. Cyrus' album is second only to that overall record.
Cyrus is scheduled to perform two shows at the Hollywood Bowl on October 16 and October 18. The anticipation for these shows was high, with nearly 1.5 million fans reportedly joining the online presale queue for a chance at the approximately 18,000 available tickets, according to The Hollywood Reporter.
