Miles Smith Resigns as Desert Ridge Football Coach Amid Controversy
The son of former NFL coach Lovie Smith reportedly steps down following a dispute over play-calling and subsequent team suspensions.
Miles Smith, head football coach at Desert Ridge High School and son of former NFL coach Lovie Smith, has reportedly resigned from his position.
The controversy began on October 2, during a 14-12 victory over Vail Cienega, when Miles Smith took issue with starting quarterback Gunner Brewer for changing a play during the game. Following this incident, Brewer was dismissed from the team.
Days later, 12 players were suspended for the remainder of the season after they walked out of a team meeting. Brewer was seen supporting his teammates during Desert Ridge's game against Corona del Sol on October 15, amidst the ongoing questions surrounding the suspended players.
Miles Smith's reported resignation adds to the turmoil for the Jaguars program, which was seeking to rebuild after an 0-10 season in 2025. His father, Lovie Smith, who had served as a volunteer assistant with Desert Ridge, is also reportedly leaving the coaching staff.
Lovie Smith himself drew further attention to the situation when he was involved in a contentious exchange with a football booster prior to a game against Mesa Red Mountain on October 9.
As Desert Ridge heads into the final weeks of its season, the status of the coaching staff and the suspended players remains uncertain.
