Mikel Brown Jr. Poised for Nets Debut After Ankle Injury Recovery
Rookie guard Mikel Brown Jr. is set to make his preseason debut for the Brooklyn Nets against the Miami Heat after recovering from a left ankle sprain.
Mikel Brown Jr. is nearing his highly anticipated debut for the Brooklyn Nets, set to play in Wednesday’s preseason game against the Miami Heat. The rookie guard confirmed he will finally suit up after missing the team's first three preseason contests due to an ankle injury.
"Yeah, I feel amazing. Very exciting, because I’ve been waiting and itching to play for the longest to this point," Brown told The Post. "So I’m glad to see that all the work is paying off and just continuing to stay on it and remain healthy. It’s very difficult, because you’re watching your teammates playing. You’re like, ‘I wanna be out there, I want to be playing with them.’ So to be able to finally scratch that itch and go out there and do what I do best, it means the world to me."
The sixth overall draft pick sprained his left ankle three weeks ago during practice. After being sidelined for games against the Charlotte Hornets and Philadelphia 76ers, Brown was cleared to participate in practices over the weekend and went through a 5-on-5 session before sitting out Monday's game in Washington.
Brown is scheduled to make his debut in his home state of Florida. "I’ve been attacking it every single day," Brown said. "Just to be able to go out there and play basketball again, it’s going to mean the world — especially back in Florida for me. I’m basically back home, so I’m going to enjoy it."
While Brown will be on a minutes restriction, the Nets have been rotating their players throughout the preseason. The team is set to open its regular season on Oct. 21 at home against the Hornets.
In other preseason news, the Nets secured their third win, defeating the Washington Wizards 131-122. Michael Porter Jr. led the scoring with 22 points. Julius Randle showcased his playmaking abilities, distributing nine assists in the first half. Head coach Jordi Fernández praised Randle's vision and passing, noting that few players possess such skills.
"His ability to throw the ball on time on target to his teammates, it’s unbelievable. Nine assists in one half, not many players can do it… I think the only one I’ve seen is Nikola [Jokic]," Fernández stated.
Randle commented on his evolving role, "[Fernández] is just using me in a lot of different ways, diversifying the way I can attack the defense, just getting more and more comfortable. Once I get the hang of it and understand my reads and angles and how I want to attack it and just understand everything and what I like, it’s only going to continue to get better."
Nolan Traore also made an impact, driving to the paint and shooting efficiently. Fernández challenged Traore to improve defensively, while acknowledging his offensive prowess.
The Nets have shown an increased ability to force turnovers this preseason, ranking third in the league, and have converted these opportunities into fast-break points, a marked improvement from the previous season.
