Mike Amor Departs Channel Seven After Three Decades
Veteran newsreader quietly concludes 30-year tenure at the network without an on-air farewell.
Veteran Channel Seven newsreader Mike Amor has concluded his 30-year career with the network, departing without an on-air farewell to viewers. Amor, who served as Seven's US Bureau Chief in Los Angeles for 18 years, is understood to have delivered his final broadcast on Friday before leaving the network without ceremony.
He confirmed his departure on Saturday via a brief social media statement. "After 11,618 days (yes, I counted!) sadly my time at @7newsmelbourne is over. Thanks for everyone's support!" he wrote.
According to the Herald Sun, Amor opted for a low-key exit, choosing not to announce his departure on air or inform colleagues in advance. Instead, he sent an email to Seven staff later that evening to inform them of his departure and express gratitude for their support over the past three decades.
In his email, Amor reportedly quipped that his exit would leave "a spare desk" at the office. "I didn't want to make any fanfare, but I wanted to let you all know, and to also say thanks for your camaraderie over the past three decades," he wrote. "I've had a great time here – covered some incredible stories – and will be wishing you all the best success from home – almost as much as I will be willing on my beloved Tigers in 2027."
Amor had been a prominent figure on Australian television for many years, most recently co-presenting Seven's weekend news bulletins with Karina Carvalho. His departure comes as the network undergoes changes in its Melbourne newsroom. Reports suggest Amor was surprised to learn he was not considered a candidate to succeed newsreader Peter Mitchell upon his eventual retirement. Speculation also indicates that former Today host Sarah Abo may be joining Seven, potentially forming a new presenting team with Mitchell in 2027, a move that could impact the network's competitive position in Melbourne's television news ratings.
