Migrant Encampments Spark Concern in London's Affluent Mayfair

A number of migrants have established makeshift camps in the heart of Mayfair, London, near luxury establishments like The Connaught Hotel. The encampments, characterized by sleeping in doorways and reports of using the street as a toilet, have drawn concern from local residents and workers.

The rough sleepers, believed to be recently arrived migrants, reportedly arrive in the area around Mount Street and Carlos Place in the early evening and depart by morning. They have been observed with homemade signs, some reading 'Homeless please help me' or 'I'm hungry.' The situation has been described by one local office worker as 'almost as bad as Oxford Street' and is reportedly worsening.

The presence of these encampments starkly contrasts with the surrounding wealth, which includes designer boutiques and high-value residences. One local restaurant worker noted that attempts to move the individuals on have been unsuccessful, stating, 'they don't want to go.' This worker also reported witnessing public urination and defecation in the streets.

Similar scenes have been reported in other parts of central London, including an encampment along Oxford Street. Reports from that area include public urination, aggressive begging, and drinking. Some individuals from these groups are suspected of pickpocketing or using their situation to manipulate passers-by.

While outreach teams in London reported a 10 percent decrease in the number of people sleeping rough between April and June compared to the previous year, statistics from the Combined Homelessness and Information Network indicate a significant number of new and intermittent rough sleepers. It is understood that some homeless individuals, particularly migrants with precarious immigration status, may refuse outreach programs and thus fall outside official figures.

The issue of homelessness has become a significant political topic, with the Mayor of London having pledged to end rough sleeping in the capital. Local authorities and homelessness charities continue to address the complexities of the situation, highlighting the need for long-term prevention, housing support, and emergency provisions.
