Migrant Crossings Surge After Three-Week Pause
Nearly 1,200 individuals arrived in the UK via small boats over three days, following a lull attributed to weather conditions.
Nearly 1,200 migrants have crossed the English Channel in just three days, marking an abrupt end to a three-week pause in small-boat arrivals. Home Office figures indicate that 1,193 people made the journey between Thursday and Saturday, arriving in 16 boats.
The surge saw 263 migrants arrive on Thursday, followed by 671 on Friday and 259 on Saturday. This comes as people smugglers appear to have capitalized on a break in poor weather that had previously hindered crossings.
Recent incidents along the French coastline have highlighted the dangerous nature of these attempts. Footage has emerged of migrants engaging in violent confrontations, including shoving and punching each other in attempts to board vessels. In one video, individuals can be seen scrambling into an overcrowded dinghy, with those already aboard striking out at others trying to climb in. Another incident involved a knife-wielding migrant threatening another passenger during a confrontation on a dinghy.
These renewed crossings occur amidst ongoing concerns about the number of unaccompanied child migrants making the journey. Figures released by Kent County Council show at least 2,182 unaccompanied child migrants have crossed since January, averaging over 200 per month.
Opposition politicians have criticized the government's handling of illegal migration. Shadow Home Secretary Chris Philp stated that people smugglers appear to be openly defying authorities, citing an example of an inflatable boat decorated with the colors of the Kurdish flag seen preparing to cross.
The government has maintained that its efforts to combat trafficking gangs are yielding results, pointing to cooperation with French authorities and seizures of boats and engines. A Home Office spokesperson stated that crossings are down significantly and that joint efforts with international partners have prevented over 50,000 crossing attempts since the last general election.
