The 2026 midterm elections have resulted in a series of historic victories, with Black, female, and Muslim candidates achieving key 'firsts' in gubernatorial races and the U.S. Senate.
Former Atlanta Mayor Keisha Lance Bottoms made history by winning Georgia's gubernatorial election, becoming the first Black woman to serve as governor in any U.S. state. She is also the first Democrat to hold the office in Georgia since 1998. Rep. Byron Donalds, R-Fla., secured the governorship in Florida, marking him as the state's first Black governor. David Crowley, the Democratic candidate in Wisconsin, will also become the state's first Black governor.
In Texas, Democratic state Rep. Gina Hinojosa defeated incumbent Republican Gov. Greg Abbott, making her the state's first Hispanic governor. Abdul El-Sayed, the Democratic U.S. Senate candidate from Michigan, is set to become the first Muslim senator in the nation's history. Meanwhile, Rep. Chris Pappas, D-N.H., won his Senate race, becoming the first openly gay man elected to the U.S. Senate.
Women are poised to hold gubernatorial offices in several states for the first time. Amy Acton, former director of the Ohio Department of Health, won the gubernatorial contest in Ohio, becoming the first woman elected governor there. Deb Haaland, a Democrat, secured victory in New Mexico's gubernatorial race, making her the first Native American woman to serve as governor of any state. Minnesota Lt. Gov. Peggy Flanagan also made history as the first Native American woman elected to the U.S. Senate.
In Louisiana, Rep. Julia Letlow won the state's U.S. Senate race, becoming its first Republican female senator. While the outcome of Alaska's U.S. Senate race was still pending, the potential victory of former Rep. Mary Peltola could have made her the second Native American woman elected to the Senate, joining Flanagan.
In other gubernatorial races, Sen. Amy Klobuchar, D-Minn., won her state's contest, and Sen. Marsha Blackburn, R-Tenn., was victorious in Tennessee. Both women will serve as governors in their respective states.
