Midlife Motherhood: Triplet Mom Advocates for Later Parenthood

Marie Gustavsson, a 50-year-old nurse from Gothenburg, Sweden, has become a mother to triplets at a later stage in life, welcoming Charlie, Lorinne, and Lara in June 2025. The birth followed IVF treatment abroad, which cost approximately £4,750. Despite already having four sons and facing a less than five percent chance of conceiving due to her age, Gustavsson and her husband pursued their desire for another child.

Gustavsson stated that while raising seven children in midlife presents challenges, including sleepless nights, she has no regrets. She finds that she is a "better" parent now, describing herself as calmer, more mature, and more understanding of what motherhood entails. She also praised public figures like actress Hilary Swank, 52, who have openly discussed having children later in life. Swank, who welcomed twins at 48 and is expecting her third child, has helped challenge societal stereotypes, according to Gustavsson.

The IVF treatment took place in Cyprus, and Gustavsson discovered she was pregnant just three days after the embryo transfer. The news of her pregnancy was initially met with a mix of shock and happiness from her family and friends, with some initially disappointed. The triplets were delivered via emergency cesarean section, with birth weights ranging from 1kg to 1.5kg.

Gustavsson credits a nanny for helping her and her husband manage the demands of caring for newborns alongside their older children, allowing them to share night duties. She acknowledges that societal judgment towards older mothers exists but believes it stems from narrow-mindedness. The majority of people, she reports, have been supportive and curious.

She emphasized the advantages of being an older parent, including a stable life and increased patience. "My babies keep me younger in body and soul," she remarked, adding that she doesn't worry excessively about longevity. Her focus remains on living a healthy lifestyle to ensure she is present for her children's upbringing.

The triplets are now thriving, each developing distinct personalities: Lara is described as independent and strong-willed, Lorinne as sensitive and social, and Charlie as fearless. Gustavsson advises other women considering later-life motherhood to prioritize their health and cherish the experience, rather than dwelling on potential difficulties.
