Midlife Celebrities Emulate Victoria Beckham's Signature Pose, Experts Caution Against Misinterpreting Flexibility
As stars like Myleene Klass, Amanda Holden, and Kate Beckinsale showcase impressive flexibility, fitness professionals emphasize that such poses do not inherently indicate superior health or youth.
A trend of midlife celebrities showcasing their flexibility, most notably by emulating Victoria Beckham's signature high-leg pose, has gained traction on social media. Myleene Klass, 48, recently shared a video of herself stretching her leg straight up in the air while seated on a sofa, channeling Beckham's well-known flexibility. This move has also been adopted by other celebrities over 40, including Amanda Holden, 55, and Kate Beckinsale.
Nicole Scherzinger, 48, has also demonstrated her flexibility, performing a split and a high-leg kick on a private jet. Other public figures like Jenny Powell, 58, and former ballerina Darcey Bussell, 57, have also shared their stretching capabilities.
However, fitness experts caution that these displays of flexibility do not automatically equate to better health or a younger biological age. Mimi Cisotti, a personal trainer and founder of Move with Mimz, stated that while it's encouraging to see women challenging notions of aging and movement, the splits or high-leg kicks are only one component of fitness.
"Maintaining flexibility can help you move more freely and feel confident in everyday life," Cisotti told The Daily Mail. "Doing the splits is impressive, but flexibility is only one part of fitness. It doesn’t automatically mean someone is healthier or biologically younger."
Cisotti suggests that a feeling of youthfulness comes from engaging in enjoyable activities with strength, energy, and confidence. She emphasizes that progress can be made in feeling stronger and more comfortable at any age without needing to achieve extreme poses.
For those over 40 looking to improve flexibility, Cisotti recommends starting gradually with gentle stretching a few times a week. She advises warming up with a short walk before stretching within a comfortable range, and crucially, avoiding any forceful movements or pushing through pain.
She also stresses the importance of seeking professional advice from a physiotherapist or healthcare provider if experiencing injuries, persistent pain, or joint conditions before attempting more advanced stretches.
Cisotti encourages individuals to focus on their own progress, such as improved reaching or bending, rather than comparing themselves to celebrity feats. She also highlights the need to incorporate strength training alongside flexibility work to build confidence and control in movement.
Victoria Beckham, who is credited with popularizing the pose, attributes her flexibility to ballet classes. Myleene Klass's recent display coincided with her promoting a new fashion range, following her absence from a recent Hear'Say reunion, which other band members described as a "shame" due to her busy schedule.
