The Midea U-Shaped Inverter window air conditioner has been recognized as the best overall unit in the 2026 Made It Here Awards, according to a New York Post review. Tested rigorously during a summer heatwave that saw temperatures soar, the Midea unit impressed testers with its quiet operation, energy efficiency, and ease of installation.

The U-shaped design of the Midea unit allows the window to be opened and closed freely, offering unobstructed views and ventilation while the AC is installed. It also features an integrated anti-theft mechanism that securely locks the window when closed. By utilizing the window frame as a sound barrier in conjunction with DC inverter technology, the unit operates significantly quieter than traditional models, reportedly up to nine times quieter. This inverter system also contributes to energy savings, with the unit achieving over 37% energy savings compared to standard models and earning ENERGY STAR certification.

Nine New Yorkers across Brooklyn, Queens, and Manhattan participated in the testing, evaluating units under real-life conditions. Robert Kearns, a tester from Richmond Hill, Queens, highlighted the unit's effectiveness in cooling both his kitchen and living room areas, even in a home with less-than-ideal air sealing. He noted that the 8,000 BTU unit performed well, even when his household's normal 12,000 BTU unit would typically be used.

Other window units recognized included the LG Dual Inverter Series for its quiet operation and energy efficiency, and the Frigidaire Gallery Inverter for its air quality sensor and energy efficiency. The GE Mechanical Window Air Conditioner was highlighted for its affordability and suitability for smaller spaces, while the Vissani window air conditioner was recommended for small spaces and its availability at Home Depot.

In the portable air conditioner category, the Black+Decker BPACT Series was named best for affordability and power, offering a budget-friendly option with a 3-in-1 functionality. The LG Dual Inverter Series portable unit was praised for its easy setup and Wi-Fi capabilities, despite a higher price point and noted noise level. The Midea Duo Smart Inverter was recognized for its humidity control and dual-hose system, though it faced some criticism for its weight and occasional condensation issues. The Vissani Portable Air Conditioner was identified as a budget-friendly floor unit option, though noted for its loudness and limited cooling range.

Testing criteria focused on ease of installation, cooling performance (speed and consistency), noise level, and user-friendliness of controls. Testers used the units during the hottest days of June, July, and August, providing feedback on their real-world performance. The Midea U-Shaped Inverter ultimately secured the top spot by balancing these essential qualities effectively, even in older homes.
