Jaden Wright, 23, of Middlesbrough, appeared at Teesside Magistrates' Court on Saturday facing charges of grievous bodily harm and intentional strangulation stemming from a separate incident. These charges relate to an alleged attack on August 25, where the complainant was reportedly living in a tent.

Wright had been arrested earlier in the week on suspicion of murder in connection with a house fire in the Grangetown area on Wednesday. The fire resulted in the deaths of Natalie McDonald, 34, and her 7-year-old niece, Valentina Foster. Four other individuals sustained injuries in the blaze.

During Saturday's court hearing, prosecutors stated that the complainant in the GBH and strangulation case suffered injuries including a fractured eye socket. Wright, who appeared in a grey T-shirt, spoke only to confirm his name and personal details. No pleas were entered regarding the new charges.

Magistrates ordered Wright to be remanded into police custody. He is scheduled to appear again at the same court on Wednesday, September 2. Cleveland Police confirmed that two men, aged 23 and 31, were arrested on suspicion of murder following the house fire. A 48-year-old woman remains in the Royal Victoria Infirmary in Newcastle in a critical but stable condition, and a 27-year-old man is receiving treatment at James Cook University Hospital. Two teenage girls with non-life-threatening injuries have been discharged.

The Grangetown house remains unstable, and work is being carried out to make the site safe and allow emergency services access.
