Michigan voters are casting ballots Tuesday in primary elections for key state and federal offices, including governor, senator, and several U.S. House seats.

The race for governor is open, as term limits prevent current Gov. Gretchen Whitmer from seeking re-election. On the Democratic side, Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson is competing against Genesee County Sheriff Chris Swanson. On the Republican ticket, Rep. John James is vying for the nomination against businessman Perry Johnson, with James reportedly seeking to leverage a Trump endorsement.

In the U.S. Senate race, the Democratic primary features Rep. Haley Stevens and Dr. Abdul El-Sayed, who are competing to face Republican former Rep. Mike Rogers in the general election.

Several U.S. House races are also drawing attention. In the 13th District, incumbent Rep. Shri Thanedar faces a challenger backed by the Democratic Socialists of America. The 7th Congressional District's Democratic primary is another closely watched contest, pitting a progressive candidate against a moderate to challenge first-term Republican Rep. Tom Barrett.

Michigan has seen significant early and absentee voting turnout. As of Tuesday morning, 18% of registered voters had cast ballots before election day, surpassing the total primary turnout of 25% in 2024. Requests for absentee ballots increased by 68.5% compared to 2022, and early in-person turnout rose by 88.6% compared to 2024, the first year early voting was available in the state.
