Michigan Teen Killed After Stopping to Aid Freeway Crash Victims

A 19-year-old Michigan man was killed on the Southbound Lodge Freeway Saturday night after he stopped to assist victims of a previous two-vehicle crash. Hezam Hussein was driving when he noticed the earlier collision had blocked two lanes of Nine Mile Road.

Hussein stopped his vehicle and then exited his car to cross the freeway to offer help. As he approached the scene of the initial crash, another vehicle swerved to avoid it and struck Hussein, according to Michigan State Police.

Emergency services from the Southfield Fire Department provided immediate CPR and life-saving measures, but Hussein was pronounced dead at the scene. Michigan State Police arrived at approximately 11:39 p.m. Initial findings suggest that drugs or alcohol were not factors in the collision.

The freeway was shut down for the investigation and reopened at 4:30 a.m. Sunday, October 4. The Michigan State Police stated that the investigation is ongoing and declined to release further details.

Hussein was a member of the Islamic community in Dearborn, Michigan, where his funeral was scheduled to be held on Monday. Social media users shared tributes, with many referring to his act as one of martyrdom and kindness.

Hussein then left his car and crossed the freeway. When he got near the collision, another vehicle swerved in an apparent attempt to avoid the crash
