Michigan's Democratic senator-elect, Abdul El-Sayed, has stated that Democrats must engage with former President Donald Trump as an "unserious fool" and abandon outdated political decorum.

In an appearance on Pod Save America, El-Sayed addressed comments about his combative political style during his campaign against Republican candidate Mike Rogers. When asked by podcast host Jon Favreau how he saw himself, El-Sayed responded, "I think there is a responsibility that we have to engage with [Trump] as the unserious fool that he is."

El-Sayed suggested that current political discourse has shifted and that Democrats need to move away from a more idealistic portrayal of politics.

"I just think there’s a responsibility for us to walk out of 'The West Wing' episode that our politics used to feel like and into the reality of where we are," El-Sayed said. He further compared the situation to dealing with a bully, stating, "if you don’t stand up to the bully, it’s not like the bully will just go away. The bully just gets stronger."

This approach reflects El-Sayed's broader view on political rhetoric, which he has expressed previously. In a 2020 interview, he accused Trump of inciting terrorism in connection with a foiled plot to kidnap Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer. El-Sayed pointed to a tweet from Trump that read, "LIBERATE MICHIGAN!" as part of a series of posts calling to "liberate" states from COVID-19 restrictions. While the FBI indicated the plot originated before Trump's post, El-Sayed viewed the tweet as emblematic of a "cultural toxicity" that could encourage violence.

El-Sayed will be sworn into office on January 3, 2027, marking the beginning of the 120th Congress.
