Michigan School's Blunt Fundraiser Letter Goes Viral

Saline Middle School in Michigan has garnered widespread attention for its refreshingly candid fundraising letter, which encourages parents to donate money directly rather than engage in traditional bake sale activities.

The letter, shared on social media by parent Dan Reese, explained that the fundraiser was intended to bypass the usual tasks of students selling items door-to-door, collecting payments, and delivering goods. It stated, "Please help us avoid that by supporting the Saline Middle School PTO with your donation, and helping us achieve our goals to support our students and faculty."

The form offered parents several donation tiers, each accompanied by a humorous justification. Options included "I do not want to bake, so here is the money I would have spent on those cupcakes" and "I do not want to walk, swim, or run in any activity that has the word 'thon' in it. Here is the money I would have spent on my child's 'free' t-shirt." Another option read: "I really wouldn't have helped anyway, so here is $100 to forget my name."

Reese's post on X, formerly Twitter, quickly went viral, eliciting mixed reactions from online users. Some commenters criticized the approach as an "easy way out" that failed to teach children valuable lessons about character building and persistence, recalling their own experiences with door-to-door sales. However, many others praised the school's boldness and originality, with one user commenting, "This is funny and I would have donated due to the boldness."

Another commenter shared a similar experience, stating, "My kids school did that one time. It's the most money they have ever gotten out of me. It's wonderful and guilt free. I absolutely loved it."

Following the online buzz, Saline Middle School posted on Facebook about their "Fall Giving" fundraiser, emphasizing that participation was "easy" and "simple." The school's official post stated, "Help us support our amazing teachers! Our Fall Fundraiser is a simple way to provide extra support for our teachers and students throughout the year. If you're able, please consider making a contribution." The school also mentioned that students could have a chance to win a "Cider & Donuts" party.

Saline Middle School has since shared a post of their own with details about the 'Fall Giving' fundraiser and how students could have a chance to win a 'Cider & Donuts' party
