Michigan School District Votes to Bar Biological Males From Girls' Sports

Monroe Public Schools in Michigan has voted to restrict participation in girls' sports to biological females, enacting a new policy that addresses both athletic competition and locker room access. The school board approved the measure with a 4-2 vote.

The policy states that "Participation in girl's athletics at Monroe Public Schools shall be restricted to biological females as documented on the birth certificate at the time of birth. Access to and use of girl's athletic facilities (locker rooms) shall follow the same restriction." The policy applies only to Monroe Public Schools and does not affect visiting teams.

This decision follows a federal lawsuit filed in October by Briley Lechner, a varsity volleyball player at Monroe High School, and her father, Sean Lechner. The lawsuit, brought by the Thomas More Law Center, alleges violations of Title IX and constitutional claims against Monroe Public Schools, the Michigan High School Athletic Association, and school officials. The suit stemmed from an incident where Lechner stated she unknowingly shared a locker room with a transgender athlete during a game against Ann Arbor's Skyline High School on September 9, 2025.

Briley Lechner expressed her concerns, stating, "What's very scary is that the day that this happened, I had no clue that there was a boy on the other team." She added that "Every female athlete deserves to have her rights respected and protected. Boys do NOT belong in girls’ locker rooms or girls’ sports." Sean Lechner echoed these sentiments, calling the new policy "an incremental victory" but emphasizing that "work to do" remains. He also described receiving harassing and threatening messages since the lawsuit was announced, but affirmed his commitment to supporting his daughter.

The policy change in Monroe Public Schools occurs amidst a broader national debate concerning the participation of transgender athletes in women's and girls' sports and their access to sex-separated facilities.
